About Martinez

Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County, with about 37,300 residents. It's named for Ygnacio Martínez, on whose Rancho El Pinole land grant the town was founded. Laid out in 1849, Martinez was a way station during the Gold Rush and became the county seat in 1850. Naturalist John Muir lived here from 1880 until his death in 1914, and his home is now the John Muir National Historic Site.

The Lay of the Land

The city is a densely built downtown valley threaded by Alhambra Creek, north of Highway 4, with suburban neighborhoods stretching south of the highway toward Pleasant Hill. Rural Alhambra Valley lies to the southwest, and much of the city is surrounded by water and regional open space. That gives Martinez three kinds of concrete work:

  • Downtown and older neighborhoods: replacing old walks, steps, and driveways, and fixing settled or cracked slabs
  • Suburban neighborhoods south of Highway 4: patios, driveway extensions, and decorative finishes
  • Hillside and rural lots: retaining walls, long driveways, and parking pads on sloped ground

Repair or Replace?

Many Martinez homes are old enough that the concrete has been patched several times. Narrow cracks and small settled sections can often be repaired. When a driveway is broken into many pieces or the base has washed out, replacement is usually the better long-term value. Our concrete repair and concrete driveways pages explain how we decide.

Water Comes First

Like the rest of the area, Martinez gets most of its rain in winter storms. Patios and driveways need a deliberate slope away from the house, and walls need drain rock and weep holes behind them. Near the creek and the shoreline, we pay close attention to the base under every slab.

Martinez Permits

Martinez is its own city, so permits for work in the sidewalk, curb, or driveway approach and for structural walls go through the City of Martinez. We confirm the requirements before scheduling.
